Curry classic is a breeding smorgasbord

THE Vince Curry Maiden, staged annually by the Ipswich club, can always toss up some great race dogs, some of who will have a lasting impact upon the greyhound racing world.

Examples of this of course are the closely related Just The Best and Token Prince, both high class sires.

Others like High Earner and in more recent times the bitches Paua To Avoid and Split Image have made their mark.

The recent win by Shipwreck (Out Of Range-Aussie Diamond by Barcia Bale) was remarkable also for the fact that similarly bred race final hotpots Black Comanche and She’s Sweet had their chances absolutely destroyed within the first stride or two by a crashing King Cole.

There is no doubting Black Comanche and She’s Sweet were the dominant Vince Curry series pair, but never got a chance to prove it in the final.

Shipwreck is by the now Irish-based Out Of Range from Aussie Diamond, a Barcia Bale-Bizarre Barbie bitch who, won just five of her 77 race starts and was placed 17 times for $20,000. Her wins were all at Albion Park and up to 710m.

But, as a multiple city winner she deserved her chance at stud. The fact she is also a litter sister to superstar Champagne Sally (23 wins, $234,000) and the classy Magic Hornet (25 wins, $122,000) added to her appeal.

She had a litter of eight to Worm Burner in 2019 and all eight were winners.

The Out Of Range whelping in March 2020, was done just three months after Ray and Mary Burman had done the same with Champagne Sally. That Out Of Range-Champagne Sally litter of 10 have all won and a number have shown great ability.

Litter sister Magic Hornet has a five-pup litter by Zambora Brockie all winners which includes Brockie Magic (8 wins, $54,000) and Magic Prince (11 wins, $53,000). It can be reasoned the Brockie-Magic Hornet litter is better.

Putting Aussie Diamond to Out Of Range brought in the proven Fernando Bale/Barcia Bale ‘nick’. It also reinforced the proven Knocka Norris/Up And Down cross. Up And Down is the fourth dam of Shipwreck.

Vince Curry runner-up, King Cole, is bred on the highly proven Magic Sprite/Barcia Bale ‘nick’. Tony Brett trains King Cole and Brett also prepared Fast Times, who was by Barcia Bale from a daughter of Magic Sprite.

Vince Curry third, Hara’s Herbie, is by Sennachie from Hara’s Annie, a wonderful broodbitch, but who brought to the mating a reinforcement of the famous ‘Portrait’ family. It was a well thought-out mating that has already produced a Group placegetter.

Which brings us back to the Vince Curry’s glamour pair who unfortunately never got to prove it on the biggest stage.

Black Comanche is by star sire Zambora Brockie from Group class Tahlia’s Way (Spring Gun-Miami Gold). The pedigree of the 30.17 Ipswich winner shows a 3×3 double of Bombastic Shiraz along the direct sireline on both sides of the pedigree.

It also shows a 4x4x4 of Trendy Leigh and Brett Lee and their famous half brother Big Daddy Cool. The Trendy Leigh/Big Daddy Cool cross is particularly strong.

Black Comanche also has Hallucinate as the sire of his second dam and he comes from the late Bob Thompson’s great damline tracing to Highland Bride.

Dam, Tahlia’s Way, is a litter sister to Neeky’s Way, the winner of the Group 2 Qld Futurity. John Dart trained them both and always plumped for Tahlia’s Way’s superb nature as a guide to her potential as a broodbitch.

Tahlia’s Way ran second in the Group 3 Chairman’s Cup at Wenty and was a finalist in the Group 1 Winter Cup.

Which brings us to She’s Sweet, who went 30.18 in the Vince Curry semi.

By Zambora Brockie, she is out of Larsie Lou, yet another daughter of Barcia Bale, this time coming from the 13-time winner Bralyn Nickie whose mother was multiple Group winner, Brad Northfield’s legend Bralyn Maisie.

Larsie Lou won five of 25 starts and was a multiple Albion Park winner.

Just like Black Comanche, She’s Sweet is by Zambora Brockie, has a cross of Hallucinate in her dam and a double of Bombastic Shiraz as well.

The Zambora Brockie/Barcia Bale cross had already been represented by that great litter which included Sequana, Stinger Noir, No Easy Beat, Made In America etc.

Lots of other interesting pedigrees have been proven lately.

Tiger Jack ran 29.62 at Wenty recently and he is bred on the fast emerging Fernando Bale/My Bro Fabio cross. Murray’s Way is another bred the same way.

Redeem Our Cash is by My Redeemer-Spare Cash and a recent Wenty win highlighted the fact he is in-bred 5×5 to the famed broodbitch Floodgate.

My Redeemer also produced a fast Cannington winner called West On Finn (29.75) who has a 3×3 of the brothers Where’s Pedro and Hallucinate to impact.

Exciting young stayer, Untapped, is by Aston Dee Bee from Mepunga Fame. She has a 4×3 of the identically bred Elite State and Big Daddy Cool to impact her in her pedigree. She is also bred on the proven Barcia Bale/Premier Fantasy cross found in Mepunga Blazer. And, anyone interested in bloodlines, should look at the pedigree of veteran star Sunburnt Highway (Oaks Road-Where’s Kitty by Where’s Pedro). The winner of more races at Wenty than any other, he is line bred 2×4 to Spiral Nikita and 3×3 to Brett Lee and balanced in both instances.
